Choosing between exposed aggregate and plain concrete

Both exposed aggregate and plain concrete can be effective choices for driveways, paths and outdoor areas. The better option depends on how the surface will be used, the desired visual outcome, the relationship to the home and the budget for the overall scope.

Exposed aggregate

Exposed aggregate reveals selected stone within the concrete surface. It adds texture and visual depth, and can suit homes that need a more tactile, architectural outdoor finish. Aggregate choice, colour and the exposure process are part of the specification.

Plain concrete

Plain concrete offers a more restrained surface and can work well where simplicity, clarity and a lower visual contrast are preferred. Texture can still be selected through the finishing process, and the construction beneath it remains equally important.
